In Descartes Finale, Sales Orders represent purchases made by consumers and typically require fulfillment. To help organize, categorize, and manage these orders efficiently, Finale provides Tags. Tags allow users to apply meaningful labels to Sales Orders, enabling improved visibility, filtering, and operational workflows.
This article explains how to define and manage Tags within Finale.
Overview of Sales Order Tags
Tags are customizable labels that can be applied to Sales Orders to identify specific attributes or processing requirements. Examples of common use cases include:
Highlighting priority orders (e.g., EXPRESS)
Marking special handling requirements (e.g., FRAGILE)
Identifying sales channels, marketplace or workflows (e.g., single-item order, or BoM)
Tags are configurable globally and can be reused across Sales Orders.
Accessing Tag Settings
Tags are defined centrally within the application:
Navigate to Application Settings
Select the Selling tab
Locate the Tags section
This section displays the complete list of defined tags and allows you to create, modify, enable, or disable them.
Defining a Tag
Each tag consists of the following attributes:
1. Tag Name (String)
-
Tags must follow Shopify-compatible formatting:
Alphanumeric characters only
No spaces
Maximum length of 40 characters
-
Example valid tags:
"EXPRESS"
"Single-Item-Order"
"INTL"
This ensures compatibility with integrated platforms and consistent handling across systems.
2. Tag Colour
Each tag can be assigned a colour using the built-in colour picker.
The selected colour helps visually distinguish tags when viewing Sales Orders.

Colour-coding improves quick identification during order review and fulfillment processes.
See figure Tag definition:
Enabling and Disabling Tags
Tags can be toggled between enabled and disabled states:
Enabled Tags
Available for selection on Sales Orders
Visible throughout the application
Included in filtering and search operations
Disabled Tags
Are no longer available for assignment to new Sales Orders
Cannot be used in search or filtering
Important:
When a tag is disabled, it is effectively hidden across the system—even from Sales Orders that were previously assigned that tag.
This allows administrators to retire tags without permanently deleting them, while keeping the active tag list clean and relevant.
Tag Management Best Practices
Use clear, concise naming conventions aligned with operational workflows
Limit the number of active tags to avoid clutter
Use colour coding consistently (e.g., red for urgent, green for completed workflows)
Consider disabling unused tags instead of deleting them to maintain historical consistency
Summary
Tags provide a flexible and powerful way to organize Sales Orders in Descartes Finale. By defining structured, marketplace-compatible tags and using colour-coding effectively, users can streamline order management and improve fulfillment operation efficiency.
Next Steps
Once tags are defined, they can be applied directly to Sales Orders and used to filter and group orders for processing.
