This article covers the workflow to create carrier shipping labels in batch for multiple orders at once in Descartes Finale. If you need to create a label for one shipment at a time, read How to create a carrier label and ship an order in Finale.
The goal of batch label creation is to help retailers create labels for multiple orders quickly from the Sales Orders list view. This workflow works best when orders can follow a similar shipping setup, so the shipper can assign services and packages in groups instead of reviewing each order one by one.
Batch label creation starts with a set of committed orders. You can use filters, tags and automation rules to gather the right orders before you begin. This makes it easier to process only the orders that are ready to ship and that share consistent shipping requirements.
Overview
Before you create labels, prepare the selected orders so Finale can request rates and create shipments in one pass. In most cases, the process follows these steps:
Verify the shipping addresses for the selected orders.
Select groups of committed sales orders and assign the shipping service and package type.
Create labels for the selected orders, then print labels and packing slips.
Depending on your process, you can also group orders with saved filters, tags or automation rules before you run the shipping actions. This preparation step often makes batch shipping faster and more consistent.
Shipping Steps
Batch shipping is done from the sales order list. The sections below explain the usual preparation steps and the two shipping actions in the Shipping Labels menu group.
Typical Prerequisites
Before you create labels in batch, confirm that the shipping addresses for the selected orders are verified. Address verification helps catch delivery issues before you buy postage and create tracking numbers. For more detail, read Address Verification in Descartes Finale.
If address verification is not configured to run automatically, you can still verify a group of orders manually. In the Shipping Labels menu group, select Verify addresses for selected sales to verify the current selection before you move on to service and package assignment.
Select Orders and Assign the Shipping Service and Package Type
Start in the Sales Orders list with committed orders selected. Group the orders so they share the same requested service or the same shipping method you want to apply. Then, in the Shipping Labels menu group, select Configure shipping service and package for selected sales.
This step assigns the carrier service based on the requested service and sets the package type that will be used to ship each order. It is the main preparation step for batch label creation because it gives Finale the shipping details needed to retrieve rates and continue through the label workflow.
You can also click through individual orders and assign a package weight to each shipment. That step is optional when product weights are already defined because Finale can calculate shipment weight automatically from the products on the order. When automatic calculation is available, manual weight entry is usually not needed for batch processing.
Create Labels for the Selected Sales
After the service and package information has been assigned, stay in the same list view and use the Shipping Labels menu group again. This time, select Create labels for selected sales to begin label creation for the current group of orders.
The command starts with information about the rates retrieved from carriers. Finale then displays a summary page with the total cost for all rates that will be purchased.
After that, the workflow continues to a dialog where the shipper can select the sublocation from which items will be fulfilled. The final step lets users create labels and packing slips for the selected orders.
Note: The batch workflow is designed to reduce repeated data entry. It works best when the selected orders have consistent shipping rules, verified addresses and product weights already defined.
Packing Slip and Label Options
The packing slip and shipping label options in this workflow are reports. That means they can be configured to match your operational needs, such as layout, included fields and printed output. If your team needs different documents for different warehouses, carriers or customer programs, update the related report configuration before using batch shipping at scale.
Because these outputs are report-based, it is helpful to review them during implementation or process changes. A small adjustment to the report can make the printed documents easier for warehouse staff to use without changing the shipping workflow itself.
