This article explains how shipping insurance works in Finale. Carriers typically include basic coverage with a shipment, and you can add additional insurance to an order when you want to insure more than that default amount. By default, Finale Shipping through ShipRush lets you opt into shipping insurance using ShipRush Total Shipping Protection. This coverage is powered by the insurance technology partner XCover.com (CoverGenius).
When that is not applicable, carrier insurance is also available.
For more information about XCover.com, see the following ShipRush article About the Insurer and XCover.com.
Insured Amount and Declared Value
In Finale, you control the insurance amount with the Insured value field, captured for each shipment package. In ShipRush, the corresponding field is called Declared value. These fields represent the same concept for insurance purposes.
All insurance behavior flows from this value. In Finale, you can decide what insured amount to set when creating labels, ShipRush receives the value and the carrier or insurer applies coverage based on that amount.

Carrier Defaults and Total Shipping Protection
If you do not set an additional insured amount, your shipment uses the carrier's default coverage. That default is usually around $100, though it can vary by carrier and service or agreements you may have with carriers. If you specify an insured amount, insurance is added to the rate price.
By default, XCover is the partnering insurer for shipments that originate in the United States and go to destinations in the United States or other countries. If a package originates outside the United States, any declared insured amount is handled by the carrier instead.
Note: To avoid extra shipping costs, don't set an insured value below your carrier's basic coverage.
If you want insurance above the carrier default but do not want to use XCover, contact Descartes Customer Support or a ShipRush representative for guidance on available options.
How Insurance Is Paid
Insurance is paid through the carrier rate price. Two insurance scenarios exist:
When using ShipRush Total Shipping Protection, the insurance price is added to the price of the rate returned by the carrier.
When using carrier insurance, the insurance price is included in the price of the rate returned by the carrier.
Order-Level Insurance Settings
You can add insurance for an order with an order-level insurance feature. Finale uses this setting to initialize insured amounts when it creates shipment packages for the order or fulfillments.
Keeping Insured Amounts in Check
A shipment can contain only a part of an order or fulfillment. If you add additional packages to a shipment, Finale validates the package values against the total shipment value and helps you adjust them.
